Flared / Hours glass Stairs... HELP !!|Page 5|Forum|WOOD DESIGNER
Hi Ness
Overall height from ground floor to 1st floor is 2570mm
stairs are to be 1200mm at the top then each step reducing down to 1000mm in the middle then each step expanding out to 1500mm at the bottom
at the top of the stairs the banisters and hand rail will continue on to the gallery that has an opening of 3M x 3M
The Building inspector has written the following:
The maximum pitch angle of a domestic stairs is 42°. The maximum rise and minimum going per tread is 225mm, but in practice cannot be used as this would result in a 45° pitch. However, twice the rise plus the going must be between 550mm and 700mm (2r+g ≥550 ≤700) The going is measured from the face of the nosing of the tread to the same point of the tread above projected down to the tread being measured.
13 risers would give you individual rise of 197.7mm meaning your going (tread) would need to be between 225mm and 305mm.
Handrails should be at 900mm (to both stairs and landing balustrades). There should be no gap anywhere that would permit the passage of a 100mm sphere. If turned spindles are envisaged, beware that, although they may be set at closer than 100mm, the adjacent ‘waist-ed’ locations may produce a gap bigger than 100mm.
Best Regards
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for this order.
Can you send me all the info you have….
Thicknesses of the different parts, steps, riser, stringers etc.
Details of handrails, volutes, balusters etc..
Also need to know how the stair joins to the upper floor, so I’ll need the joist thickness and horizontal balustrade position.
As many photos of the stair well as possible will help get everything right.
cheers,
Ness

Hi Kevin,
I’m tied up at EuroBois up to Saturday, so I wont be able to look at your project until Tuesday next.
Hope that’s OK for you.
To start the design I’ll need to know the thicknesses of the different parts, steps, riser, stringers etc.
Do you need handrails with volutes, balusters etc..
Als need to know how the stair joins to the upper floor, so I’ll need the joist thickness and horizontal balustrade position.
Cn you send some photos of the stair well ?
All the best,
Ness

Hi Kevin,
This is the link for the page you need to make the payment: https://wooddesigner.org/membe…..discounts/
The other one provides some background info on the service. As far as turnaround is concerned, I’ll let Ness reply. He’s at the Eurobois woodwork exhibition for the next 2 days, so please bear with him. Normally though you’d be only be looking at a matter of days once he’s got all the info he needs from you.
I’ve copied across the design idea you posted on that new forum topic below, and deleted that other forum thread too so everything about the project can be found here).
Ness, this is what Kevin is after…
