Hi Kevin,
I’ve started your drawings but have been on the road these last couple of days.
I’ll try to post a first draft of the general design tomorrow.
However, for the detailing I’ll need to know the exact sections of the posts and spindles.
Are you gong to make these from rough timber or buy ready made parts?
The curved handrails and strings will have to be custom made either laminated traditionally or using horizontal laminates.
So for the strings the finished thickness can be set to anything convenient.
The same is true for the handrails except that if they have to match the handrails on the landing, and you are buying these readymade, we’ll need to know the section of these before we design the curved rails.
If you are using manufactured parts, can you send me the sections of the parts, if not it would be useful to have the thickness of the rough timber readily available to you or your supplier.
If you want to use our supplier I can ask him what timber thicknesses are convenient for him.
In all cases we need to know the exact thickness of all parts before we draw the detailed manufacturing drawings.

Looking at the stairs that are currently installed they seem only to be a 25mm thick tread / step and only a few mm thick on the riser ? (ply)
The Georgian style newel post and spindles seem to be the best
the hand rail maybe more 100mm wide by 60 – 75mm high ?
I look forward to seeing your drawings do you need any other information from the building inspector at this time are you fully versed on the regs ?

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for all the info.
For the frames, I’ll make them similar to the photos you sent.
For the newel and spindle design, it’s really a matter of taste. 50×50 is a reasonable section and I suggest you browse the net to find a design that you like.
I’ll start organising it all and setting up some preliminary drawing this coming week.

The stringers / string (the part either side of the stairs that has the main shape (hour glass shape)
these need to be thick enough to hold the banisters? (Do you have any suggested links for reference to banister designs ?)
step thickness I would like to be guided by you, I do not want these stairs to creek what is the norm ? 40 – 50mm ?
riser thickness does this normally mirror the thickness of the step?, does the riser give extra strength or is it merely an infill panel ?

thickness ? 125mm wide? 75mm high ? again what would you suggest and what size would you say the picture is ?
panels framing sections: can you please tell me what this is or send me a link to a picture ?
with regards to newel post and spindles is there a design reference site you can direct me do ?

One last question on the sections of the stair parts.
Can you tell me the finished thicknesses and/or sections for:
– stringers thickness
– steps thickness
– risers thickness
– handrail sections
– baluster sections
– newel post sections
– panels framing sections
– panels in framing thickness

– will the upper floor balustrade require panels on the out joist face like in the suffi1 stair? If so don you want me to draw up the balustrades and panelling? YES & YES PLEASE

– what wood and sections will you be using for the differents stair parts? This depends of course on how you are planning to build the stair. NATURAL OAK, BUT THE STEPS WILL BE COVER IN CARPET SO PLY ? YOUR RECOMENDATIONS PLEASE
You can build the stair yourself, in which case I’ll need you to send me the finished sections that you’ll be using. WILL BE MADE IN ENGLAND OR CHINA AND WILL BE FITTED BY THE CARPENTER
We could also find a supplier to supply and machine your parts, in this case we’ll contact a supplier to give you a quote and and see with him the best sections to use. CAN WE DO BOTH ? AS YOUR CONTACT MIGHT WORK OUT MORE COST EFFECTIVE THAN OURS?

IT WILL BE INSTALLED ON TO 4 STEELS
