In answer, we pay our spray shop to do it for us….
However, if we are doing a smaller piece and I wish to ‘not’ save my sanity, then hand finishing for us would be by applying water based stain by brush, we may grain fill before but this would only be on the top.
Then 3 to 5 coats of modified french polish applied with a large polishing mop, sanded back between coats and a good coat of wax on at the end.
This is quite quick, but still a bit mind numbing. Put some headphones on and listed to some tunes before while you work.

I’m not sure I would call a 21.5″ x 34″ panel “small”, but then again… I’m a novice wood-worker!
That said, can you guys (this is going out to everyone who’s following my post) tell me something??? How do you guys deal with the boredom of sanding/staining/lacquering? In other words, how do you keep your sanity!!!!!
I’m truly loving the “planning/cutting/building” process (and those “Eureka!” moments 
), but the rest takes up soooo much time!!! And for me, frustration starts setting in (especially after having taken soooo much time getting it just right and then something happens where a scratch is made 
or when the veneer is caught and damaged
, etc.)…
In any case, my inquiring mind wants to know as it simply wants to stay sane! LOL

3/4″ thick for framing is fine for small frames.

I’m not sure if you noticed or not in the photos, but one of my biggest “boo-boo’s” (that I made in this build) is now noticeable…
Do you remember our discussion where we chatted over the fact that the rails/risers of the panels were to be 1″ thick (in order to best accommodate the “framing support”)? Well… I bought boards 1″ thick (quarter-sawn) which (as you know) meant the end result were 3/4″ planed boards. I only realized what I had done after all of the boards were purchased and planed…
Of course, this could have been a HUGE/Costly mistake… But, I was able to recover/continue with those boards as Reg (my woodworking friend) and I believed that there was just enough material to support/enclose those panels when all was said and done. Whew!!!
The silver lining came as this also saved me having to worry about the quarter-round moulding that I was thinking of using on the inside of the frame – it is no longer needed.
Anyways, I thought I’d let you know and allow you to have a chuckle over it!!!
