Derek Lamb on Simple home stairs https://wooddesigner.org/forum/stair-building/simple-home-stairs/#p11244 Stair Building https://wooddesigner.org/forum/stair-building/simple-home-stairs/#p11244 My apologies, Alex. The wrong plan  was uploaded. My plan is to use a straight handrails and stringers, for simplicity. Please find attached correct plan. I have corrected penetrations to 20mm. If this is correct for newel posts of 90mm, then please check I have not made any other errors. I will check the correct file is uploaded after posting.

Thank you.

In the attached file, I have made a slight adjustment to the market penetration, but there are no other concerns,

If you agree, I will send you the documents.

Derek Lamb on Simple home stairs https://wooddesigner.org/forum/stair-building/simple-home-stairs/#p11236 Stair Building https://wooddesigner.org/forum/stair-building/simple-home-stairs/#p11236 Thanks for that correction. I have corrected the penetration values for steps. Does this penetration value (20mm) hold for stringer to newel posts? I have changed it to this value on the plan.

Alex on Simple home stairs https://wooddesigner.org/forum/stair-building/simple-home-stairs/#p11180 Stair Building https://wooddesigner.org/forum/stair-building/simple-home-stairs/#p11180 Hi,

A quick note: the staircase you upload already has a 30mm penetration between the step and the stringboard. 20/15mm is sufficient and easy to mill and assemble.

Derek Lamb on Simple home stairs https://wooddesigner.org/forum/stair-building/simple-home-stairs/#p11179 Stair Building https://wooddesigner.org/forum/stair-building/simple-home-stairs/#p11179 Thank, Alex

I think I'll stick to simple, straight for my first stairway. I think I've made the changes you suggested. I made changes to step penetration to newel posts, as it may allow easier assembly, sliding in. Depth could be altered to match stringer penetration.

Would this plan work?

Cheers,

Derek

Alex on Simple home stairs https://wooddesigner.org/forum/stair-building/simple-home-stairs/#p11151 Stair Building https://wooddesigner.org/forum/stair-building/simple-home-stairs/#p11151 Hi,

This may also depend on your installation solution. I think that stringers and curved handrails are more comfortable, but there is also the alternative of using straight per parts and subtly softening them.

-In files joint, I can't see the correction for penetration

-In curved mode, handrail have different dimension from others ( Right handrail 2 - 62*42 instead of 42*62)

as it is wider than the stringboard, it will have to be offset by half a thickness to bring it back into line with the stringboard.

All the best, Alex

Derek Lamb on Simple home stairs https://wooddesigner.org/forum/stair-building/simple-home-stairs/page-2/#p11150 Stair Building https://wooddesigner.org/forum/stair-building/simple-home-stairs/page-2/#p11150 Thank you for the quick response, Alex. Yes, the marked strings are against a wall, but they are the right side, as the stair moves up anti-clockwise. There is a window  (1200mm wide) in the middle of the wall on the right side of flight 2. This is why I thought it would be easier to put a handrail and bannisters on that side, then continued it on flight 3 for uniformity. It takes up space on the stair, but I don't see an easy alternative.

I had not thought as far as penetration of risers, and the values used for penetration  were arbitrary. Thank you for the correct values. I have made corrections in the plan. I was planning on constructing the steps as the 3 flights separately, then fitting them together.

I did the design with curved strings and bannisters as an alternative, but seemed complicated and didn't look like a comfortable walk. What would your opinion be?

Thanks again.

Derek

Alex on Simple home stairs https://wooddesigner.org/forum/stair-building/simple-home-stairs/page-2/#p11149 Stair Building https://wooddesigner.org/forum/stair-building/simple-home-stairs/page-2/#p11149 Hi,

Your staircase seems coherent,

If we understand correctly, the left-hand side of flights 2 and 3 is against the walls?

Penetration can be reduced, the standard rules for joinery are 1/3 the thickness of the stringers, but not less than 10 mm.

I can't see the riser penetration into step, is it to simplify assembly?

I need to build a staircase in my home. I am planning to use structural plywood/laminated. F17 grade pine 25mm thickness laminated to working thickness of 50mm, cut from 1200mmx2400mm board. Newel posts will be 90mmx90mm pine., To make it simple I have kept all stringboards straight.

Please view my attached file and give advice on any changes which should be made.

Thanks,

Derek
