Using upper floor supports as newel posts?|Forum|WOOD DESIGNER
Hi Ness and Stefan.
Yep, I am going to put handrails on in a week or so. Will do a Tassie Oak handrail with stainless wire at 100mm spacing running parallel with the stringers.
I will see if I can upload one more pic that will explain what is holding up the last newel post. Will make a pic of it this week.
Thanks again!
Pete

Hi everyone,
Few computer problems somewhere down the line, so I’m posting Pete’s pics for him here. GREAT JOB! Thanks for sharing them with us.
Couple of comments from Pete too:
The stair is in Oregon oak. I am sure Ness would be interested as to where the forth upper floor support went! What Ness has achieved with his program is amazing. Thinking about the complexity of my project is a mindful and it may be worth putting in a section about how to build them. What I found was… Start at the bottom and work up. Sounds logical, but until the bits were in slowly going up I found it very hard to understand what was going to happen at the top- until I got there. Also, I found a plumb bob invaluable at the measuring stage. When am I doing the next set? Um… Maybe in a year or three. Hopefully as soon as possible- just need to buy and build my next house.Cheers Stefan, oh, and what you have done on your side of the channel with the site is great. i hope it is rewarding for you.Cheers and thanks heaps.Pete

Hi Pete,
We’ve noticed that Safari on mobile devices gets a bit stuck adding images to the forum. I’ve tested Mercury and Chrome browsers on my iphone which work fine, so that might be a solution for the future.
Cheers,
Stefan

Hi Pete,
Great to hear that your project is working out well.
Can’t wait to see the photos!
All the best,

Hi Ness and Stefan.
well, over the weekend I finally started putting the stairs up.
all going brilliantly, 11 stairs in about 14 hours, the other 5 I will do next week. I have some pics but can’t seem to upload them from this iPad, so next time I am on my PC will pipe them through.
cheers
Pete.

Hi Pete,
Thanks for the file.
The handrail goes through the post but this is an error of stairdesigner.
The program assembles the handrail from newel to newel and does consider the intermediary post a newel, so you have to adjust manually the joint line.
In fact you have to cut the joint line up against the intermediate post.
Over the trade show is very tiring but meeting some great people.
Looking forwards to seeing the photos.
all the best
Ness
Hi Ness.
i have sent the zop file to your email addresses. Also there is the copy on your email, this page from 20th Aug.
i cant post the zip file to the forum using this ipad for some reason. The big computer is tied up for tonight unfortunately. I hope this is ok.
cheers

Hi Pete,
It’s late here and I’m just back from the trade show.
I’ve just seen your post, but as I’m away I haven’t got you stair project on my lap top.
Could you post the file on the forum so that I could have a look at it tomorrow.
Thanks o lot and sorry to keep you waiting for the answers.
All the best,
Ness

Hi Peter,
Just to let you know that Ness is at the trade show in Paris for most of this week. He’s planning to continue to reply to queries on the forum, but there might be a bit of a delay.
Please bear with us if there is, and sorry for the inconvenience.
Thanks,
Stefan
