Hi again,
The ref is the wall or stair well dimensions.
So if there’s an outside wall and the stair turns left the outer wall is on the right.

note that the first step can not be behind the outer face of the second string, so you have to adjust the length of the first flight accordingly
This means that the length of the first flight must be equal or greater that the width of the second:
